What Is the Weight of the Soul?

One night, my uncle passed away in his sleep. The doctor said it was peaceful. But when we entered his room, we could feel it instantly—he was no longer there. His body lay still, untouched, but the presence we all knew was gone.
What left him that night? And… did it have weight?

This question has haunted mystics, scientists, and ordinary people alike for centuries. And it might just change how you see yourself forever.

Introduction

I was 13 when I saw someone die for the first time.

It was my Dadi (grandmother). She was 78, soft-spoken, always chanting God’s name. Her body had grown weak, her breath shallow, but her eyes remained peaceful till the very end.

The moment she left her body, I felt something strange.

Not fear. Not pain. But an empty stillness. The kind of silence that makes your skin tingle. Like something sacred had just passed through the room.

Later, when everyone left, I sat near her feet and whispered, “Where did you go, Dadi?”
No one answered. But somewhere deep within, a question began to bloom—
"What just left her? And... was it measurable?"

What leave the body of death

Whether you call it atma, soul, consciousness, or spirit, almost every culture believes there is a non-physical part of us—something eternal, something untouchable—that leaves the body when we die.

And yet, science has often avoided the subject.
Why? Because it cannot be dissected. It cannot be put under a microscope.
But that hasn’t stopped people from trying…

When science met mystery

In 1907, a Massachusetts doctor named Duncan MacDougall tried something extraordinarily unexpected. He wanted to weigh the soul.

He placed dying patients on a specially designed bed scale and waited for the moment of death.

And he observed something shocking:

Each body lost around 21 grams of weight at the exact moment the person passed away.

He concluded:

“That is the weight of the human soul.”

Imagine that—a scientific attempt to measure the invisible. It was called absurd by many but also admired by seekers around the world.

Could this be proof that the soul has substance?

It’s Not About Grams?

Modern researchers have since dismissed MacDougall’s work, saying the change could be due to body fluids, lungs deflating, or natural processes.

But those of us walking the spiritual path know—this isn’t about grams.

It’s about vibration. About presence. About the shift that can be felt, even if not measured.

Have you ever stood next to someone dying?

You know what I mean.

There’s a moment—an invisible transition—when the room changes. Something profound happens.

And that is beyond physics.

Soul as Energy, Not Mass

According to Dadaji (just as Bapuji Dashrathbhai Patel taught), the soul is not matter. It’s pure energy, far subtler than any known element. It vibrates at such a high frequency that physical instruments cannot detect it.

It doesn’t have a “weight” like iron or water.

But it holds consciousness, intelligence, karmic memory, and spiritual light.

When it enters or leaves the body, the body becomes like a switched-off machine.

The electricity is gone. The bulb remains—but the light disappears.

My Friend’s Father

Last year, my close friend Ravi lost his father. We all gathered for the final rites.

I watched him kneel beside the body, tears falling, and whisper,

“Papa, you were just laughing with me. Where did you go so fast?”

It hit me again—the body was there, yet he was gone.

What left him?

What traveled to another dimension?

Can something so powerful, so alive, really be… weightless?

The Brain Dies—But Consciousness Doesn’t?

Here's something strange:

Many people who’ve had Near Death Experiences (NDEs) describe leaving their bodies, floating above hospitals, and seeing doctors operate on them—while their brain was clinically dead.

Thousands of such stories have emerged across the world.

They talk of a bright light, a tunnel, divine beings, and a sense of freedom—as if their essence was flying, weightless, and limitless.

And when they return, they are never the same.

Could it be… that the soul does have a form—just not one we understand?

The Child Who Remembered

In Rajasthan, a boy named Anurag started telling his parents stories about a village 200 kilometers away. He insisted:

“I was a shopkeeper there. I had a red scooter. My name was Vishal.”

The parents thought he was imagining things.
But when they took him to that village… He led them to a small general store, recognized people by name, and even remembered the accident that caused his death.

He was only 5.

What part of him carried that memory?
His brain was new. His body was new.
Only one answer remains: his soul.

More Than We Think

Dadaji says the soul has three main coverings:

1. Sthool Sharir (physical body)—what we see and touch.

2. Sukshma Sharir (Subtle Body)—our mind, emotions, and ego.

3. Karan Sharir (causal body)—our karmic impressions, soul light.

When we die, only the physical body is left behind.

The subtle and causal layers—filled with sanskars, karma, and spiritual vibration—go with the soul.

That’s why sometimes, even when a person dies, their presence lingers.

You feel their energy in the room. You dream of them. You hear their voice inside.
Because energy doesn’t vanish.
It transforms.

What Did 21 Grams Represent?

Maybe it wasn’t the soul’s mass.
Maybe it was the sudden release of spiritual energy—a shift in the frequency of the body, like a flame being blown out.

Those 21 grams could be:

The release of pranic energy
The exit of astral memory layers

Or simply a symbol—a gentle reminder from the universe that even the soul leaves footprints.

How to Feel Your Soul Now

You don’t have to wait for death to feel your soul.

Here are a few ways to connect:

Sit in silence every morning. Focus on the space between your breaths.

Chant your name silently—not your body name, but the name of the divinity you feel drawn to.

Visualize a light in the center of your forehead. See it glowing brighter each day.

Watch your thoughts without reacting. That watcher… is the soul.

And once you touch it, even for a second—you’ll know.

You’ll feel it.

You’ll cry, or laugh, or go completely still.

Because nothing feels as light and real as your true self.

The Soul Has No Weight, Yet It Holds Everything

Let me tell you something Dadaji once said that I’ll never forget:

“The soul doesn’t weigh 21 grams. It weighs the entire journey of your evolution. It holds the memory of lifetimes, the potential of universes. But to the body, it feels like a whisper.”

So what is the weight of the soul?

It’s zero on a scale.
But infinite in meaning.

It’s the part of you that never sleeps, never dies, and never breaks.

And once you realize you are not this body, not this name, but that pure soul,

you’ll stop fearing death—and start living with purpose.
